Description

Okay, first off, if anyone is wondering why I decided to put glasses on him, there is literally a story behind it:

"Luke, why on earth are you wearing those enormous glasses? I don't believe you've ever had any sort of vision problems."

"Oh, they're not for sight-correction, Professor," Luke explained matter-of-factly, pushing the obnoxious frames higher onto the bridge of his nose with a proud smile. The professor gazed at the boy queerly.

"Then why ever do you insist on wearing them?"

Luke's expression became downtrodden, and he sighed as his eyes traveled up to Layton's signature top hat.

"People know you, Professor."

Again, Layton was at a loss. "Indeed, but what does that have to do with your new choice of eye-wear?"

Luke stood abruptly. "Why do you think they know you, Professor?"

"Ah, so this is some sort of puzzle, then?" the professor's lips curved into an amused smile. "Do continue."

"Ugh, Professor, to be so smart, you sure don't seem to catch on very quickly," Luke rolled his eyes in a childish manner. "But, if you'd like to make this more difficult than it has to be, I'd be happy to. Right then, four criminals are to be put to death unless they can solve a puzzle. The four criminals are lined up on descending steps and they are all facing the same direction. A brick wall separates the fourth man from the other three. The criminals are wearing hats and are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. In summary, man 1 can see men 2 and 3, man 2 can see man 3, man 3 can see none of the others, and man 4 can see none of the others. The men don't know what color hat it is that they are wearing, but are told to shout out the color of their hat as soon as they are sure of the color. They are not allowed to turn around, move, talk to each other, or take their hats off. Who is the first person to shout out the correct answer and why?”

Layton absorbed the information as quickly as possible, running over the information in his mind several times and testing different theories. Luke was sure that he had the man stumped, but, to his surprise, the professor's face lit up only a minute later.

“Man 2, my dear boy,” Layton declared, smiling in an avuncular manner as Luke anxiously awaited his explanation. “Since there are 4 hats and 2 of each color, at least two hats to the left of the wall are the same color. If the two prisoners closest to the wall on the left have the same color hat, man 1 knows that his hat is the opposite color, so he can shout out the color of his hat. If man 1 remains silent, then man 3 knows that man 1 does not see two hats of the same color in front of him. Consequently, man 2 knows that his hat is the opposite color of the hat in front of him. So, he can shout out the color of his own hat.”

Sighing heavily, Luke couldn't help but smile. “I can never put one over on you, Professor.”

Layton smiled warmly. “Years of practice, Luke. But I still am not clear on how that relates to the matter at hand.”

Luke's tired smile suddenly broadened into a fantastic grin, which soon split to reveal peals of laughter from the boy. The professor, perplexed, could only watch as the boy nearly doubled-over with giggles.

“Oh, Professor, how could you not get it?!” Luke questioned through boyish chuckles. Raising his pointer finger, Luke jabbed the digit towards the top of the man's head. “It's your hat! Everyone recognizes you by your signature top hat!”

Blinking once, Layton chuckled quietly. “Yes, I suppose they do. However-”

“'I still don't know how that offers any explanation as to your choice of eyewear,'” Luke quoted in a deeper octave. At the professor's blank stare, Luke placed his hands on his hips and made an expression of mock-exhaustion. “I suppose I'll just have to outright give you the answer then, huh?”

Layton blinked owlishly. Giggling once more and smiling brightly, Luke pushed up the glasses further onto his nose.

“I want people to recognize me, too, Professor, by something unique and eye-catching, just like you,” Luke admitted, a familiar, admiring twinkle in his eye. "Plus, I figured if I'm going to grow up to be a genius like you, I should look the part!”

Finally understanding the boy's curious ways, Layton smiled endearingly, adjusting the brim of his favorite top hat. “Your consistency is quite comforting, my boy.”
